Chapter 7: Holiday Reunion

The last two days of the first show on the Florida Winter Circuit went smoothly. The Reynolds group had done well for itself. Bert had won the Youth All Around High Point Championship as well as several champion awards for individual events. Two amateurs had won individual awards as well. Tango had won the Junior Western Pleasure Championship for Hank and Desi had won the senior with Brad riding. Brad was happy with that accomplishment, and in addition, winning the amateur pleasure championship.

The real buzz around the fairgrounds was Reggie. When word somehow got out that he was riding with Hank many folks, some complete strangers, came up to Brad to express concern and disbelief that Hank would take a chance on this character from the hunter-jumper world. Clients within the Reynolds program were alarmed and both Hank and Brad had to do some fast talking to calm them down.

However, by the end of the day on Friday, everyone seemed dumbfounded at the change in the arrogant, boorish Lord Reginald Farthington the Third. Not only had he won championship awards in all three of the events in which he had ridden, he seemed to have been transformed from an egocentric jerk to an all-around good guy. He had been helpful with the other riders in the barn, helping Bert get ready for his classes by bathing his horse, showing another competitor an easy way to braid a horse’s mane for hunt classes and, most shocking of all, offering to help Rico and Juan muck out stalls. This offer they politely refused, as Reggie had no clue as to how it should be done properly. The grooms had to redo the two stalls they let him do.

Hank and Brad—with Greta following along beside them—walked back to the camper carrying the trophies and other prizes they had won for their championship performances.

“Do you think it will last?” Brad asked Hank.

“Will what last?” Hank replied.

“This apparent change of heart Reggie is paradin’ around. Do you think it’s all an act to get us to agree to take him on permanently?”

Hank shook his head. “Danged if I know. He sure is making one hell of an effort. It seems to be sincere, but…well, he’s got two more weeks of showin’. I think that’s plenty a time for him to cave in if this is all an act. Wonder what it is about us that’s motivatin’ him to work so hard to change? Yeah, we made him a good offer, but still…”

As they continued to walk along, Brad mulled over what Hank had just said. The deal they had offered Reggie was a plum. But it wasn’t out of the ordinary for a trainer to offer a good rider a chance to ride with him. Then a thought struck him—maybe there wasn’t the us or the we in the deal Reggie had been offered that made him so anxious to close it. Maybe it had more to do with…Brad turned to look at the handsome hunk of a man who strode along next to him.
